A pilot for an adventure series with Claude Akins
14 March 2006 | by See all my reviews

"Charge" or "Outpost" was a pilot about three free-wheeling calvary sergeants. This pilot was a very appealing comedy-adventure western and it could have made a good show.

The three heroes were Claude Akins, Jay Lanin ( Lt. Roper on "Follow the Sun") and Christopher King. I was a big fan of Claude Akins from his many guest star roles ( "Twilight Zone", "Superman", "Wanted: Dead or Alive"), and it was fun seeing him be the hero for once.

The three sergeants would would yell "Charge" when they attacked a foe, which is where one of the episode titles came from.

The idea for the show may have come from the movie "Sergeants Three" with Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Peter Lawford (that movie was a remake of "Gunga Din").

The episode ended with the guys trapped in a cave. They dive into a pond in the cave which miraculously takes them outside to safety.

The episode was written by Dave and Andy Lewis, who would go on to write the movie "Klute" with Jane Fonda and Donald Sutherland.

Claude Akins, Jay Lanin, and Christopher King made a fine team, and they looked like they were having fun together.

I wonder if this show could have been in any way an inspiration for the much broader "F Troop".
