good Cliff, bad story
7 June 2011 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

I often wonder how many episodes of The Outer Limits (or a lot of other serious shows, for that matter) differ in the televised product from the written story. I know of at least one episode of the newer series that contained a key change. I bring this up because I suspect that "Joyride" is one of those cases. To introduce you to the story, the wonderful actor Cliff Robertson (who was in the very first, original Outer Limits episode "The Galaxy Being", and at 75 may have been the oldest guest star on the new series) plays a former astronaut from the Mercury program in the 1960's. He requests to go back into space (with the supposed intention to confront the mysterious lights he saw on the original mission). A Congressional panel, understandably, turns him down. Undaunted, he accepts an offer from a billionaire (Barry Corbin, in all his "good ol' boy" charm) to be a "guest" on one of his commercial flights. Andrea Martin (SCTV) does a creditable job as Robertson's confidant (she describes herself at one point as a "NASA groupie"). I didn't care much for the other "guests": the newlyweds engage in sexual acrobatics (everyone experiences weightlessness) that are not essential to the plot and seem to be a "gotcha!" moment, and the journalist is a stuffed shirt. To get back to the original point, and not to give away the ending, but it seemed that there were two endings (the one OL should have used, that made more sense, and the one that they did use, which raised more questions than it answered). That being said, "Joyride" was still pleasant to watch. It wasn't overly-scary, and more of a character study. Plus it is always good to see a major star still on top of his game.
