Barbara Matheson

Dr. Noah Phillips' wife Meredith is dying of cancer. She's not responded to any of the traditional treatments and Noah, himself a medical research scientist, uses an experimental technique meant to regress cells. His hopes are dashed when, after a seemingly successful initial treatment, Meredith quickly reverts to her previous condition and dies. His research funding is cut off but he avoids manslaughter charges over her death. He relocates to a small town 50 miles away and and befriends his new neighbor, Barbara Matheson whose husband Greg is a brute. Noah is still working on his regressor technology, experimenting on small animals such as frogs. As he grows closer to Barbara, he wants to help her but realizes that the balance of nature cannot be disrupted. Written by garykmcd

Did You Know?

Per the title, the balance of nature refers to the theory that biological systems are usually in a stable equilibrium and a small change in some particular parameter will be corrected by some negative feedback that will bring the parameter back to its original "point of balance" with the rest of the system. Barbara Rush and Have Presnell

Fun story.

Dr. Noah Phillips invents an age-reducing machine in an attempt to remove tumors and cancerous growths.

He receives support from an elderly neighbor, Barbara (aptly played by Barbara Rush), who is abused by her husband, Greg (Presnell).

She says Greg is nervous about being passed over for a promotion by a younger man, which is what happens anyway.

When Greg is passed over, he severely beats Barbara.

When Noah finds her, he decides the only thing to do is to use the years he has left to make Barbara younger, making himself elderly in the process.

Thing is, Barbara goes back in time with her memories too.

She thinks it is 1957, an interesting rejuvenation bit.

Greg overhears at the window and becomes enraged and is off to get a gun.

Now the conclusion I got was that the youth, Noah's youth that was now in Barbara, would end up transferred into Greg and Greg would be off to get that promotion somewhere, leaving the elderly Noah with the elderly Barbara, again being portrayed by Rush (when Barbara is young, she is portrayed by a different actress).

Well, that didn't happen.

Sci Fi channel would show six episodes of the Outer Limits. 'Balance of Nature' was the fifth one and was the most interesting one.

I usually like episodes of this show, such as past ones that starred Amanda Plummer or Melissa Gilbert.

This one was fun to see Barbara Rush and Have Presnell together.
