No Place Like Home ran for five series. There is nothing in the opener to show that it would have such legs.
It was also the first prominent role for actor Martin Clunes who plays the youngest son Nigel Crabtree.
The episode begins with Nigel going to Scotland to study at university.
This would leave Arthur Crabtree (William Gaunt) and Beryl Crabtree (Patricia Garwood) free from their kids. All four of them would have now flown the nest.
Leaving them to spend time together. They can have romantic nights in, even go on a second honeymoon.
Only for Nigel to change his mind about studying. Son Paul also comes home after getting fired from his job at a car showroom. As well as daughter Tracey who has broken up with her partner.
Arthur's life of bliss is short lived. Three of his kids are back at home and his neighbours Vera and Trevor keep poppin around.
It is the standard middle class, middle of the road sitcom of the time about middle aged people. I did not find the first episode that amusing.
Arthur is the prototype Tory voter. There are a few mentions of him being a believer in free enterprise. I did sympathise with him, his kids act like freeloaders.
