Complicity by Omission?

Toronto police Detective Kevin O'Brien (Scott Hylands) and his partner Detective Frank Giambone (Jeff Wincott) are summoned by dispatch to investigate a domestic disturbance.

Going by procedure scouring the location they happen upon Jerry Doyle (James Kidnie) a suspicious looking character whom they take back to the station. He turns out to be the Southside Rapist, responsible for no less than 5 sex attacks over the course of the preceding week.

O'Brien manipulates the spectacularly dumb, easily agitated creep into confessing and even into directing them to the scene of his most recent crime. But his latest victim Margaret Davis (Brioni Farrell) won't talk. Getting more violent as he goes Doyle's other victims won't talk either for all the reasons many rape victims don't.

Davis's married lover Charles Thompson (Robin Ward) who happens to be Deputy Mayor and an up and coming political figure potentially has his career at risk if she won't keep quiet. Testifying might expose her to media scrutiny and reveal their affair. Thompson owns the house where the attack took place. She is his personal assistant and the house was their love-nest.

O'Brien and associate Detective Fleece Toland (Lynda Mason Green) apply subtle pressure to Thompson, then Davis hoping to induce her to do the right thing and follow through with identifying her attacker. Doyle, freed on technicalities has opted to continue his rampage even more violently. Each victim is one he would not have gotten to had he been incarcerated if previous victims had come forward.

'Deadline' was one of seven shows in the series to feature Lynda Mason Green as Detective Fleece Toland and one of six to feature Wendy Crewson as crown prosecutor Dorothy Fredericks. Both are well utilized in this particular episode.

Here we see Robin Ward in one of his better acting roles. Of course he did considerably more than act to pay the bills. Included in that were stints as a game show host, a cooking show chef and even a weatherman. Canadian actors who want to stay employed have to be versatile.

Torontonians will recognize various local landmarks like Allan Gardens, Varsity Stadium, Old City Hall in this episode. Whilst it was shot in Toronto and was very identifiable for those viewers who live in the city there was little else done to attach the production to its Canadian origins. But nothing noticeable was done to suggest it was not Canadian either.
