Bill joins the Ted Chambers gym because, as always, Bill can't control himself around celebrities. As quickly as he joined, Bill wants to quit the gym but a guest-starring Ben Stiller refuses to let him go. The staff learns Dave's big dark secret that he is... Gasp! ...A CANADIAN!!! Of course this leads the staff to question all they know about their own Dave Nelson and themselves. The staff is left feeling hurt and as Beth says, "naked." Jimmy seeks Dave's help to work on his table manners so he can sit next to Bill Clinton at a White House dinner. Dave confesses to Jimmy that he has hidden his true origins because of his fear of being thought to be a Canadian spy. To this, Jimmy replies, "you poor misguided Canadian bastard." [Dave is teaching Jimmy table manners]
Jimmy: Where's the food?
Dave: It's just pretend.
Jimmy: Dave, pretend is for little girls and mental patients. Sucks on pretend! Do you have any real food?
Dave: There's, um... 10-day-old donuts.
Jimmy: All right.
Dave: Don't eat it. Bear in mind that it's 10 days old.
Jimmy: [Looking at how hard it is] I'll try to resist.

It's silly, but it works beautifully
12 April 2016 | by See all my reviews

Ben Stiller guest stars as a physical fitness trainer (a real used car salesman type) that ensnares Bill in a gym membership - and seeing Stiller play such a sleaze is enough of a win right there.

But I have to confess to being utterly enthralled by the other story line, in which Dave's Canadian origins are found out . . . and he proceeds to take heat from everyone in the office. Canadian jokes are low-hanging fruit, but there's something about seeing the character getting flack that's so tickling. Foley's a Canuck himself, so it feels like he's in on the joke.

It's the little things that make this work. Like this priceless one from Joe: "I can't believe it. All those hours I spent talking hockey with him and he pretended not to be interested!"
