Dick the stooge
Jimmy_the_Gent49 July 2018
Dick is forced to work as a sidekick in a new late night talk show hosted by Don Prince, an obnoxious former sitcom star.

Prince is played by legendary insult comic Don Rickles, who in reality was good friends with Bob Newhart. Your enjoyment of this episode will depend on how you feel about Rickles, I think he is hilarious so I loved this show. Don throws some insults at Dick which becomes popular with the audience. The funniest scene is when it becomes a regular skit on the show called "Pick On Dick" where audience members insult him and win T-shirts. Don also talks about Joanna, saying that he doesn't know what those Merchant Marines see in her! She later gets a heavy breathing Merchant Marine caller and she has a funny line when she tells him "Go lift weights!"

The Greatest Straight Man

Dick's contract requires him to do whatever the owner wants. In this case he has hired a guy named Don Prince (played by Don Rickles) to do a talk show and Dick is to be his sidekick. Rickles fires insults at Dick and he just sits there and takes it. The perfect foil. He insults his family. Makes him look idiotic and ineffective. There's a segment called "Pick on Dick" where audience members insult him with Rickles-like shots. Even George shows up on the show. Dick is devastated but he can't break his contract and what started as a single show became a five nights a week gig. I used to hate Rickles, but as I got older he sort of grew on me.
