Was one of my least favourite episodes when younger, still is
Although 'The New Scooby Doo Movies' was a patchy and inconsistent show it is also interesting and fun.
There are some great episodes, especially "Wednesday is Missing", "The Dynamic Scooby Doo Affair", "The Caped Crusader Caper" and "Scooby Doo Meets Laurel and Hardy". Also really enjoy "The Frickert Fracas" and "The Ghost of the Red Baron", while there are a couple of episodes that have been better on re-watch such as "The Spooky Fog of Juneberry" and others that haven't fared quite as well such as "The Secret of Shark Island" and "The Haunted Horseman in Hagglethorn Hall" (still like both episodes though).
Having said that, there have also been episodes that have never done much for me. "The Phantom of the Country Music Hall" is one of them, along with "Sandy Duncan's Jekyll and Hyde" it is the weakest episode of the first episode. Starting with things that are done well, the theme tune is catchy and infectious and the music in general is haunting and full of energy. While repetitive, though for a reason, the Jerry Reed song is a nice addition and sung well.
Shaggy and Scooby are still likable and fun, their friendship still charms immensely as well. Some of the writing is amusing as well, and the voice acting is good, very good in the cases of Don Messick and Casey Kasem.
On the other hand, the rest of the gang don't have as much to do as they should have done, and Velma's somewhat condescending attitude here is also a turn-off. The animation continues to be less than great, colourful and atmospheric sometimes but also flat and crude. The setting is one of the series' least atmospherically effective, more could have been done with it.
Jerry Reed himself is so underused and so bland here that it is so easy to forget he's there, like the likes of Davy Jones he is swamped and lost within the story except even worse. Remember absolutely nothing about the villains either, easily among the show's worst. "The Phantom of the Country Music Hall" is one of few 'The New Scooby Doo Movies' episode where the story is a mess, not just dull and stretched feeling, but also aimless and because the episode has a run-out-of-ideas and made-up-as-they-go-along vibe a lot of the second half feels confusing, none of the previous episodes had that problem.
In summary, didn't care for this when younger and still don't. 5/10 Bethany Cox
