Pledge's Pickles is suffering a serious staff shortage. Workers, particularly young and female ones, are handing in their notices en masse. There is a sex pest on the factory floor. His name? Stan Hardman ( Joe Gladwin ).
Stan tells Eli that he has discovered a secret store of pickles - known as Kitcheners - which are fifty years old. Eat one and you become incredibly randy. Eli sees a golden opportunity to make some extra money on the side. He starts selling them at five bob, not per jar but per pickle...
Written by Tom Brennand and Roy Bottomley, this funny episode hails from the first season of the hit Granada show. 'Stan' is one of my favourite 'Dearest' characters, and he's on screen a lot of the time here. As excellently played by the late Joe Gladwin ( also great in 'Last Of The Summer Wine' and behind the voice-overs for a famous series of Hovis bread commercials ), he is all spectacles, no teeth, and flat cap. You would not want to stand next to this man in a supermarket checkout queue.
'Penelope' is played by the late Jennifer Jayne, whose movie credits include 'The Liquidator' and the incredibly silly sci-fi flick 'They Came From Beyond Space' in which she played a glamorous scientist. This beautiful lady also wrote a horror film called 'Tales That Witness Madness' that really should have been entitled 'Tales That Induce Laughter'. Peter Tuddenham, the Vicar, provided computer voices ( 'Zen', 'Orac', and 'Slave' ) for the B.B.C.'s fondly remembered space opera 'Blake's Seven'. Willoughby Goddard, a,.k.a. 'Arnold Ackroyd', was Hugh Burden's boss in 'The Mind Of J.G. Reeder'. Bill Waddington, the landlord, was miserable pensioner 'Percy Sugden' in 'Coronation Street'.
Funniest moment - Lily's attempt to get hold of some of these libido-increasing pickles to give to her Walter. Eli hands over a jar of red cabbage, and says with a cheeky grin: "Go on, have an orgy!". The idea of Walter turning into a sex monster is truly mind-boggling.
