Storyline

The posthumously sawed-off right lower leg of an unidentified Marine, tattooed Semper Fi, wearing a sock and a boot, is discovered in a dumpster in Clarksburg, West Virginia. The sheriff seems amused. The marine had a titanium ankle joint, probably from an accident, with a series number, ordered in 1999, implanted in Marine First Class Thomas Dorn, 22 years old, who was reported deceased two years ago in Harmony, WVa. by local doctor and pro bono coroner Sylvia Chalmers without an autopsy after collapsing with classic heart attack symptoms in her surgery. Tony hates such small towns, Kate loves that life style. His paternal half-sister Melissa IDd him and had his cremated remains scattered, but the doc doesn't recognize his USMC file picture. The leg's owner died from a digitalis OD. The sycamore seed found on the boot matches Melissa's garden tree by DNA; she was the beneficiary of his sizable life insurance, subscribed shortly before...

Midway through the 'flash', the camera shifts to a zoom-out from behind the severed leg. Three seconds later, we see Gibbs take his badge out of his pocket and flash it again.
