Maxwell's judgmental mother, Elizabeth, comes for a visit. Before she arrives at the house, she and Fran have an altercation at a florist shop, this before Fran knows who her adversary is. Upon meeting Fran at the Sheffield house, Elizabeth has a feeling, supported by stories from C.C., that Fran is more than a nanny to Maxwell and as such, Elizabeth wants Maxwell to fire Fran. Always at odds with his mother, Maxwell shows her that he will do whatever he wants without interference from her. He goes the extreme opposite and in front of his mother asks Fran to marry him. Maxwell obviously regrets his action after the fact. After initially thinking the proposal sincere, Fran quickly understands that it was merely an act of defiance against Elizabeth, so Fran does the most prudent thing: in her own words, she plans to "screw with Maxwell's head". But in the end, Maxwell's actions and Fran's resulting screwing with his head may have the effect of bringing Maxwell and Elizabeth closer ... Written by
