Things are going well romantically between Maxwell and Fran after Maxwell finally tells Fran that he loves her and doesn't take it back. Despite C.C. convincing Fran that Maxwell will extend their courtship indefinitely, Fran ultimately learns from Niles that Maxwell is prepared to pop the question. Maxwell swore Niles to secrecy who in turn swears Fran to secrecy. Fran however tells Sylvia who tells everyone in the western world. Thus everyone knows that everyone knows that Maxwell is going to propose, except for Maxwell who still thinks that only Niles knows. Maxwell sets up an extended family dinner so that he can propose in front of everyone important in Fran's life. Needing to say his final goodbye as a single man to his first wife Sara, Maxwell calls Fran to tell her that he's running a little late. However he doesn't show up for the dinner.
