Storyline

Two traumatic experiences happen to the Sheffield household. First, Maxwell's tough, proper and judgmental grandmother, Eloise, comes for a visit, which puts the entire household on its collective toes. And second, Danny Imperiali, Fran's ex-fiancé, dies from an allergic reaction to body waxing. At Danny's funeral, Fran meets a gay man, Harvey, whose life story worries Fran for herself: after his lover's death, his widower's family did not acknowledge their relationship. In light of Eloise's visit and the way Maxwell has hidden her from his grandmother, Fran thinks this will happen to her if Maxwell dies. Feeling like she no longer has a future at the Sheffield house, Fran quits and takes a job at a department store cosmetics counter. Maxwell wants her back but has to be careful about what he says around Grandma Eloise. Meanwhile, Maxwell finally tells Niles what he said to Fran on the plane and took back. Written by Huggo

Trivia

One of Niles' theories of what "the thing" between Fran and Maxwell at the end of season 3 was finally gets proved true when Maxwell tells what "the thing" was to Niles. This marks the end of a 12-episode arc where "the thing" has been talked about in almost every episode. This is the first time an actual arc, not just a repeated theme or a running joke, has been used in "The Nanny". See more »

Goofs

When Fran drops her sandwich and olives into Danny's coffin, one olive is left on her plate - in one view. Then the view changes and there is no olive on the plate. Then the olive reappears and disappears again. See more »

Quotes

Niles: Did you just say that you told Miss Fine that you loved her?
Maxwell Sheffield: [Mumbling] Mm-hmm.
Niles: And then you took it back?
Maxwell Sheffield: [Mumbling] Mm-hmm.
Niles: THAT'S IT! THAT'S THE 'THING,' ISN'T IT? Oh, I could kick you in the seat of the pants!
