  • Jessica's fellow guests at a remote inn include an obsessive birdwatcher, an enthusiastic nature lover who likes to streak through the woods, a rich jerk and his shy wife, and a devoted fisherman whose wife doesn't sit home waiting for him. When Jessica sees one guest push another into the lake, she's determined to understand what happened and why.

  • Jessica reluctantly accepts Harry Pierce's invitation to stay at his nearby inn but she is soon the witness to a murder, or so it would seem. She clearly saw Howard Crane and his wife Carolyn arguing in a rowboat on the lake and her falling - or perhaps being pushed - into the water. That's good enough for Sheriff Tupper who thinks he couldn't have a better witness that Jessica but she's not sure what it is she saw exactly and the autopsy confirms that while Carolyn did drown, it was likely in shallow water. As she looks into the case, there seems to be more than one possible suspect.

  • Harry Pierce convinces Jessica to stay at the inn at Cabot Cove's Stone Lake, once visited by Edgar Allan Poe. While birdwatching with Burton Hollis, she sees from the shore how millionaire Howard Crane's wife Carolyn drowns, apparently pushed out of the fishing row boat. Her theory that it was a staged fraudulent death is dismissed when Carolyn's body is found, but it was located too far out to have just floated there. Instead of sheriff Amos Tupper's 'open and shut case' she finds relevant links between several other inn guests.
