Shortly before Christmas Cabot Cove tycoon Alan Forsythe welcomes Charlie Davenport McCumber into the family, fiancé of his daughter Elisabeth 'Beth' and the new firm partner, which Bert Lazarus begrudges. Charlie answers an anonymous blackmail tape with a message from a woman, in his car. Beth finds it and sees him kiss a mystery girl there. At a charity raffle a Santa shoots (but not fatally) Wanda Andrews, employed in the hardware store by real estate magnate Floyd Bigelow, who reveals he suspects her of embezzling $400,000 from the pension fund. Jessica doubts the obvious and sets a trap to clear Charlie.
It's Christmas-time in Cabot Cove and Charlie McCumber and Elizabeth Forsyte become engaged. Charlie is an army vet who served in the Gulf war but is studying hard to get his accountant's certification and join his future father-in-law Alan Forsyte's firm. After getting a threatening cassette tape, Charlie finds Wanda Andrews shot but still alive. When the police find Charlie's pistol nearby, he's arrested. He certainly has a secret - a little girl from a previous relationship - which could have been what the tape was all about. The colors red and green are central to Jessica solving the case.
