My Favorite

I'm not even a very big fan of The Munsters as I'm middle-aged and one can tell - that even though there's some laughs now and then that only an adult can appreciate - this series was made for the younger crowd. When I was a kid my favorite character was, of course...Fred Gwynne as Herman Munster. But at my age I now enjoy the sexy Yvonne DeCarlo as Lily. Having now said why I'm not a big fan - but why I'm still...a fan - this is my favorite of all episodes of The Munsters. Why is this my favorite? A guest star is Ken Osmond. Leave It To Beaver fans will instantly remember him as Eddie Haskell...and he's now college-age. He plays a character similar to Haskell, at least as far as deep-seated fears and insecurities go. Here he's part of a college sorority initiation. But I got the most laughs from the scene with Grandpa casting The Transylvanian Brain Freezer on Herman in the dungeon. Watch for it...Absolutely hilarious! As good as this episode was, I would've given it a 10 if the story line were a little more substantial and the laughs were throughout the entire half-hour. But as it is, this one is still definitely worth viewing.

As dumb as they come

Warning: Spoilers
And no episode of The Munsters could ever lay claim to being otherwise, notwithstanding the occasional not to contemporaneous social phenomena, or the occasional contemporaneously notable guest stars (mostly pro sports figures, for some reason).

For isntance, who could believe that Eddie Haskell (Ken Osmand) and one other skinny frat boy could move the ponderous giant Herman from his own bed to a sorority house closet, all unaided and undiscovered?

But it was fun to see a very young and very brunette Bonnie Franklin.

A Universal Studio Homecoming for Eddie Haskell

Warning: Spoilers
Herman develops devastating hiccups after a night a the local drive-in movie watching a scary frightening feature. Meanwhile Grandpa (Al Lewis) has Herman drink his new formula to cure hiccups in which Herman collapses and is put to bed. Enter two College teens Dave Macklin as (Phil) and a familiar to this studio Ken Osmond as John. The two youths enter 1313 Mockingbird Lane (Herman's Home) uninvited. They just broke in as part of a college initiation. They go down to the dungeon as the rest of the Munster's are sealed up in there coffins upstairs except for Grandpa who hangs upside down when he rests. The two freshmen boldly go upstairs to the master bedroom when they find Lily and Herman fast asleep. Phil has an idea. "Why not take this monster body, Herman's, and place it in the Alpha Cappa sorority house." They some how carry the hefty Herman out of his dusty cobweb infested Chateau and off to the local college. The next morning Herman wakes up in the girls dormitory dodging hanging nylons and watching a young looking Bonnie Franklin in curlers. Herman manages a phone call to his wife Lily. When Herman explains to his wife where he is Lily is infuriated. Grandpa steps in to save him. Watching this episode makes me yearn for more episodes of Leave it to Beaver. For the later generations, the Eddie Haskell character on the surface was well groomed and impeccably dressed. Respectful of authority figures and especially older woman using his cheesy patronizing methods of praise, i.e. "That's a lovely dress your wearing Mrs. Cleaver!" Once he was alone with his peers the real Eddie emerges as a bully and conniving schemer. All of us grew up with our share of Eddies throughout our lives. Ken Osmond withdrew from show business and did a stint in the Army and then on to the LAPD working in the vice squad. Ken was decorated for bravery and other awards during his time on the police force.

Great out of the house adventure. Best of all worlds. And the drive-in to boot.
