Average Family? Also, Owens' Last Appearance As 'Marilyn'
ccthemovieman-16 April 2007
"Event Magazine" has chosen, among its 800,000 subscribers, the Munster family as the "average American family of the year" which means a prize of $5,000 plus a full picture story of the family for the magazine. Harvey Korman plays the magazine photographer assigned to 1313 Mockingbird Lane to photograph the entire family and get their story. Fred Beir plays the reporter. The two also are supposed to spend the weekend at the house!

Everyone is thrilled about the honor except Grandpa, who is insulted to be called "average" and will not be part of the deal, which could ruin everything. He plans on disappearing.

The reporters only see Marilyn for the first few hours, so have no idea what they are in for, except for the weird-looking house. Once again, a so-so episode. The earlier shows in this first season seem to be better, but I expect it will pick up again.

Note: this was Beverley Owen's last appearance as "Marilyn." From what I have read, she only intended to do the pilot show for this program and was upset when CBS picked up the show. After 13 weeks, she got her wish and was released from the program, succeeded by Pat Priest (who was better, anyway, in my opinion.)

Bye Bye Beverley
kgraovac17 October 2023
This is the last episode with Beverley Owen as Marilyn. She finally got her wish to leave the series as she was extremely unhappy and wanted to go back to New York to be with her fiance. I wish she had stayed on.

Other reviews have explained the plot, so I will just say that Harvey Korman is perfect in this. He has great timing and doesn't overplay here, and there is chemistry with his partner the reporter, whose constant passes at Marilyn are amusing --- no #MeToo movement back then!

This is the only original episode that was colorized on the DVD set. The backgrounds have too much of a sepia tone and they still can't perfect the process as some shades look too pastel. Much better to check out the 1966 feature film MUNSTER GO HOME to see what they looked like in real Sixties color.

Event Magazine Chooses The Musters as the 'Average American Family'
Rainey-Dawn25 September 2023
Event magazine has chosen The Munsters as the 'Average American Family' - sight unseen. They are perfect for the photo shoot and sends out 2 men to photograph them and get the details. When Grandpa hears about this he is insulted by the word 'average' and disappears, jeopardizing the family winning the $5000 prize money.

As always, Fred Gwynne and Al Lewis steals the entire show. The rest of the cast are wonderful in this great episode. And this is Beverley Owens last time playing Marilyn (she left the show to get married).

You can get this episode in the 3-Munster Laugh Pack or the entire Munsters TV Series on dvd or blu-ray. Great for anyone that loves comedy-horror!

9/10.
