- A woman who helped her magician husband (The Great Kandinski) perform escapist acts is scared when his final act doesn't work and he dies. She comes to The Blue Moon Detective Agency and asks for protection. David and Maddie are stunned to realize the wife had several indiscretions and the husband, who was heavily into the occult, had threatened that he would come back from the grave and kill her.
So, for $2,000 David and Maddie spent the night in the mortuary making sure his corpse doesn't escape. Unfortunately, they fell asleep and when they woke up in the morning the body of Kandinski has disappeared.
Maddie and David try to warn Mrs. Kandinski, but she is frightened and shuts the door in their faces. From there they go to the morgue. When they discover, according to the coroner, Dr. Nealy, is that Kandinski really was dead they ask to look at the John Doe bodies. The first body they discover is a Jane Doe, their client - Mrs. Kandinski!
Maddie visits a magic shop/school to learn how the trick was done, but comes up empty-handed. The next morning Agnes DiPesto shows David and Maddie a headline that reads "Dead Magician Robs Jeweler and Dies in Fall."
The coroner holds a press conference in which he admits someone in his department falsified the death records for Mr. Kandinski, possibly in return for part of the jewel heist and that there will be a thorough investigation and Mrs. Kandinski's death will be re-opened and re-examined as a homicide.
After the press leaves, Nealy goes into his office and removes the diamonds from the jewel robbery. As he's leaving through the examining room, Maddie slides out from one of the drawers and confronts him. He pulls a deadly needle and tries to inject her, but David slams open one of the mortuary storage drawers and slams the door into Nealy's face, but not before he admits to faking Kandinski's death and pushing him off the roof during their combined jewel heist.
