A mother knows
29 May 2009 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

A woman's greedy son-in-law plots to steal melons from her garden that give people superhuman strength. He soon discovers that it's not the melons themselves but rather, her unorthodox gardening techniques that are responsible...

"The Mother Instinct" returns back to Monsters' forte: scary monsters. Other than that, the episode itself isn't really all that terrific. The one thing that holds your attention is waiting for the smarmy son-in-law to get what's coming to him. I will give this man his props as he really portrays an absolutely despicable human being convincingly. Elizabeth Franz was also good as the mother who loves her daughter but is unwilling to give in to her rotten husband despite the fact that she knows this will make things harder for her daughter. You do feel for her slightly.

Once he reveals that he's merely been using his wife for her money and drinks the juice from the melons, you definitely don't want him to win. Fortunately, our wise old mother has engineered the ultimate setup for him in an ending that's not at all surprising, but incredibly satisfying. The mother worm deserves an honorable mention as it looks pretty good. Despite the appearance of a monster, there's no violence and gore to be found here.

"The Mother Instinct" is basically another take-it-or-leave-it episode. There's nothing particularly spectacular about it, but it isn't horrible either. It has some slightly original elements to its story and decent-looking monster so it's worth checking out at least once.
