I fall to pieces

Two cops are shocked to find a homeless man has mysteriously lost his arms overnight. They take the case to their boss who clearly knows more than he's letting on...

I enjoyed "Leavings." Though a little slow, it presented a good story and Tony Shalhoub usually does a decent acting job in most everything he appears in.

It's rather ironic that this episode is about cops because it really doesn't have much action in it. The story basically unfolds through dialogue and recollection of past events that occurred offscreen, of course. It's certainly a different approach and unfortunately, it causes the episode to drag a little at times. The storytelling approach does do a good job creating mystery as you'll wonder what all this is building up to for a good two-thirds of the episode. Once the big revelation comes, the rest probably won't shock you.

This episode really stands out in its use of special effects. The man with no arms looks very realistic and to add extra impact, he is shown shirtless with no arms so they can't just have him hide them in a big shirt. There is a shot of a live human head in a jar that looks fantastic. The monster, composed of numerous human parts, didn't look as good by comparison but he looked good enough to not detract from the episode.

Unless you read a synopsis beforehand, "Leavings" is worth seeing just for the ending. If you did, then at least you can see some great special effects.
