"I'm rich! I'm rich!"

"Fools' Gold" would be episode twelve from Season One of "Monsters" and it happened to be quite fun little episode. Probably could have done more with it, but in the end it was acceptable. A little nasty, a little suspenseful, tailored with an atmospheric score and neat looking monsters design (Debbie Lee Carrington playing the wicked critter) with moments of icky make-up FX thanks to its handy work.

Two construction workers along with their female supervisor come across a dead body of a fellow co-worker near a newly dug up entrance of a cave. Fearing what might have done it, is soon forgotten when one of them discovers a gold coin in the hand of the decease. Now they go into cave to see if they can find more gold, but what awaits them is like something out of a fairy tale; a troll.

Simple if lively story, where the few cramp cardboard sets are made to good use by the material's tight focus. What starts of as the temptation of greed, becomes a lot more when trapped as survival becomes the key. Some minor slow stretches involving reflective conversations make there way in, but never does get distracted from the lingering threat and there are enough conflictive dialogues to heighten the anxiety of the situation. The performances are sound enough with Jeff Conaway leading the way.
