Quotes

Kathy Monroe: Clayt, while you were gone, the twins and I and Amy had a little meeting.
Clayt Monroe: Oh?
Kathy Monroe: We decided we don't want to go back to Ilinois no matter what. And we know there'll be problems ahead. Still, like Ma said... we trusted Pa. When it comes right down to it I guess we'll have to trust you for now on. We'll do whatever you say, Clayt.
Clayt Monroe: We'll not going back. I told the Major we'll stay. I told him I'dl fight if I had to. It's just like pa said... If it were easy, it ain't worth having.

Good intro
2 January 2013 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

In this first episode of the short lived television Monroes series, we are introduced to the Monroe family and the reason they are out all by themselves.

Clayt narrates the beginning of this episode. He introduces us to his parents who die before the opening credits. The remainder of the episode is about Clayt deciding what would be best for his family. They do make it to the piece of land their father had claimed years before. The family is reasonably stressed without their parents. Clayt, at the age of 18, is learning how rough the range is.

Major Mapoy's character is introduced in this. He's a complex character. He doesn't like the Monroes, yet he likes them. He wants to be fair, but he doesn't like law-breaking or squatters. Clayt proved himself a man by being able to stand up the the Englishman. Personally, I really like Major Mapoy. I think he has a lot of respect and class as far as the Monroes are concerned.

Clayt immediately takes on the role of patriarch. Kathy isn't afraid to give him her two cents, yet she understands that Clayt will make the final decision on what is best for their family.

Jim is also introduced in this first episode and his story is also explained. Clayt and Jim share a certain bond, so when Jim gets in trouble, Clayt knows he has no choice but to help him.

Yes, Clayt is a bit vulnerable and young but through the following episodes, we see him live and learn - just like every other western hero had to do...
