Monty Landis and Burt Mustin
14 January 2014 | by (Youngstown,Ohio) – See all my reviews

Broadcast no. 40 (Oct 30 1967), "Monkees Marooned" held promise as a spoof of Tarzan and jungle pictures, but the gags are pedestrian and infrequent. Peter trades his guitar for a treasure map, so the group wind up on a desert island where Major Pshaw (Monty Landis, filming his sixth straight episode) has been searching for buried treasure for ten years, chasing off all trespassers with the aid of his Man Thursday (Rupert Crosse). The best gags involve 83 year old Burt Mustin playing a geriatric Tarzan called Kimba (he would return for "Christmas Show"), plus an unbilled bit from director James Frawley as Dr. Schwartzkov (not Dr. Livingstone). The two featured songs make their second appearance- "Daydream Believer," just issued as the band's fifth single Oct 25, and "What Am I Doing Hangin' 'Round?" (still unavailable, the PISCES LP only released Nov 14). "Monkees Marooned" was 39th in production, filmed May 16-18, Michael Nesmith's last episode prior to his May 23 tonsillectomy. Next in production- "Monkees Watch Their Feet."
