Once Upon a Time in the Land of Kirshner
30 December 2013 | by (Youngstown,Ohio) – See all my reviews

"Captain Crocodile" is a satire of Captain Kangaroo, with Joey Forman as the Captain, who wants to destroy The Monkees for trying to ruin his gig and take his show away from him. Along the way, there are a dizzying array of sketches spoofing various TV shows of the day: "To Tell a Fib," "Frogman and Tadpole," and a weather forecast that looks dire indeed, despite Nesmith's sunny disposition. One scene finds Micky attempting to entertain the 'Crocodile Corps' by telling a bedtime story, beginning with 'once upon a time in the land of Kirshner' ('The Man with the Golden Ear,' Don Kirshner's reign as Colgems music coordinator was soon to end), to which Mike continues about the 'wicked stepladder!' Best of all, the Captain Crocodile show is owned by a 12 year old (a birthday gift from his father), played by Joey Baio, older brother of Jimmy (SOAP), both cousins of Scott (HAPPY DAYS, CHARLES IN CHARGE). Apart from the second appearance of Peter's "Your Auntie Grizelda," we hear the debut of Boyce and Hart's "Valleri," their original Aug 6 1966 production, featuring the tricky guitar work of Louie Shelton, who also did the honors on "Last Train to Clarksville." Unreleased until 1990's MISSING LINKS 2, this particular version became so popular with deejays across the country that it would be rerecorded on Dec 26 1967, for single release Mar 2 1968, backed by Nesmith's "Tapioca Tundra."
