Marvin Miller: Michael Anthony

Quotes

  • Michael Anthony : [Anthony has been summoned during World Series time. He enters the study to find Tipton seated in a high-backed chair, bouncing a baseball up and down in his left hand, which is the only part of his body visible to viewers]  You sent for me, sir?

John Beresford Tipton : Tell me, Mike, did you see today's ballgame on television?

Michael Anthony : Yes, sir. Quite a game.

John Beresford Tipton : Have you stopped to consider what important factor decided the Series?

Michael Anthony : If I remember correctly, sir, it was a sacrifice hit.

John Beresford Tipton : Precisely. How akin to ballplayers we humans are. Some always trying for that home run and invariably striking out; and some who sacrifice so that others can make home plate.

[Tipton hands an envelope to Anthony]

John Beresford Tipton : Here is the name of another millionaire.

  • [first lines]

Michael Anthony : [to the viewers]  My name is Michael Anthony. Among the handful of multibillionaires in the world, John Beresford Tipton could have been regarded as an eccentric. His hobby was giving away a million dollars, anonymously and tax-free. By what manner of selection he chose the recipients of these fantastic gifts, I never knew. But as his executive secretary, it was my job

[Indicating a pile of case history folders]

Michael Anthony : to give him a full report of what occurred in the lives of these people. Silverstone was the home of John Beresford Tipton. From there, he shared a common interest in our national pastime. I recall one day after a crucial World Series game, he called me to his library.

  • Michael Anthony : [Anthony knocks at the door of Nora Paul. She responds]  Are you Nora Paul? Mrs. Nora Paul formerly of St. Louis?

Nora Paul : Yes, I'm... I'm Nora Paul. What do you want?

Michael Anthony : My name is Michael Anthony. May I come in?

[Nora permits him entry. The scene then shifts to several minutes later, after Anthony has issued a check to Nora and explained the stipulations of the million-dollar gift]

Michael Anthony : And that check for $1,000,000 is yours, tax-free.

Nora Paul : [Staring at the check]  I, I... Why should anyone want to give me a million dollars?

Michael Anthony : The donor, who is my employer, never discusses the objects of his philanthropy with me.

[Producing a document from his briefcase]

Michael Anthony : All he asks is that you sign this pledge

    [Nora reads the paper]

Michael Anthony : . It stipulates that you are to tell no one, except your husband, the amount or the source of this money. If you do, anything you may have left in the form of tangible assets will be reclaimed by the donor.

Nora Paul : A million dollars.

  • Michael Anthony : [Reviewing the Nora Paul case file. To the viewers]  Nora Paul was a paradox. A million dollars gave her everything in the world to live for, except one thing that she was willing to die for.
