Marvin Miller: Michael Anthony

Quotes

  • Michael Anthony : [Anthony enters the Tipton study, where he finds Tipton seated in a high backed chair at his desk. Before Tipton on he desk is a miniature street of a small own. Only Tipton's right hand is visible to viewers]  You sent for me, sir?

John Beresford Tipton : Mike, ever have a town named after you?

Michael Anthony : I've never deserved that honor, sir.

John Beresford Tipton : [Chuckles]  Well, I don't know that I've deserved it either. But this little town, high in the Rockies, has rechristened itself "Tipton."

Michael Anthony : Quite a distinction, sir, to have a whole town named after you.

John Beresford Tipton : Indeed it is, Mike. Difficult to live up to an honor like that. Some men have found it impossible.

[Tipton hands over envelope to Anthony]

John Beresford Tipton : Our next millionaire.

    [Anthony bows]

  • Michael Anthony : The town of Mitchellton named after Jerry Mitchell's grandfather. When Jerry was called to the service, he left behind a prosperous business. His father died while he was in Korea, and on Jerry's return, he found the factory had collapsed under the weight of debt following his father's death. Jerry's inheritance, 1/3 ownership of the plant, was now just worthless stock.

  • Michael Anthony : [to the viewers]  My name is Michael Anthony. Until his death a few years ago, I was Executive Secretary to the fabulously wealthy John Beresford Tipton. This is Silverstone, a 60,000-acre estate where Mr. Tipton lived out the last years of his life. Here he had time to indulge his many hobbies, the strangest of which was his habit of giving way to a total stranger the anonymous gift of $1,000.000.

  • Michael Anthony : [Appearing at Jerry Mitchell's door]  Are you Jerry Mitchell?

Jerry Mitchell : Yes, I am.

Michael Anthony : My name is Michael Anthony. May I come in?

Jerry Mitchell : Oh, sure. I'm working on my budget.

    Michael Anthony : Having trouble?

Jerry Mitchell : Nothing a million dollars wouldn't cure.

Michael Anthony : [Startled]  Well then, I'm sure I can be of help to you.

[Opens his briefcase and removes a check]

Michael Anthony : have something here for you.

    [Displays check]

    Michael Anthony : A cashier's check for $1,000,000.

    [Mitchell laughs uproariously]

Michael Anthony : Please, look at it.

    [Hands check to Mitchell]

Jerry Mitchell : But Dad's estate was bankrupt, wasn't it?

Michael Anthony : Oh, this is not an inheritance. It's a gift, tax-paid.

Jerry Mitchell : Why me? Who would give me a million dollars?

Michael Anthony : The donor wishes to remain anonymous. But the money is yours,

    [Removing document from his briefcase]

Michael Anthony : if you will sign this agreement pledging not to reveal the source or the exact amount of the money, on penalty of forfeiture.

Jerry Mitchell : [Reading agreement]  It says I can tell my wife.

    Michael Anthony : Well...

    Jerry Mitchell : I don't have one.

Michael Anthony : If you should marry, you may tell your wife.

Jerry Mitchell : But a million dollars? You sure you want to give me all this?

Michael Anthony : [Smiling]  Quite sure.

    [Mitchell signs the pledge]

Michael Anthony : Thank you, Mr. Mitchell.

    [Anthony returns document to briefcase]

Jerry Mitchell : Thank me? Thank you, Mr. Anthony. Isn't there anything else? I just sign the paper and that's it? This is all mine?

Michael Anthony : It's all yours. Good bye and good luck, Mr. Mitchell.
