The Pest House is the kind of solid stand-alone that Millennium could have excelled at, if confusing the world and his wife hadn't been a lot more important to the two minds behind the controversial second season. Ernst Harth is so convincing as Bear that the atmosphere of the entire episode is ratcheted up a notch just by his presence, Michael Massee gives Purdue a sharp and shiny edge, although some aspects of the character and story are too oblique for even Massee to explain and resolve. Lance and Terry are strong and comfortable together, they manage to make some shaky parts of the script seem oddly stable and are so far into their characters that the joins are no longer visible. A great Millennium from a time when Chris Carter was busy elsewhere.
