Destiny in doubt

Most of this action-packed episode is a fantastically orchestrated battle royale between Skullmaster and Lava-Lord. It's so fun and gratifying to see the terrible and untouchable Skullmaster turning tail and being on the receiving end of a foe who's almost as evil and powerful as he is - but one who is sporting the armoured might and firepower of a humongous walking battle tank! I love the rich and detailed animation that is used in the various things involving lava in this one, especially the awesome Magus as it stomps towards Skull Mountain through the river of lava and brings molten destruction down upon Skullmaster and his minions!!! I love how in one scene where Max and Norman have hijacked the downed war machine and instead of bothering with the launch mechanism, Norman instead simply opts for whipping the missile out the open hatch instead! And gasp! Could it possibly be? Hast Virgil actually turned traitor against all his friends!? Ha! what do you think(?) If you've proper watched this episode then you'll know that it demonstrates exactly how strong Virgil's powers of calculation and foresight truly are. He somehow knows exactly how everything is going to unfold that will lead to the critical point in time where Max will be in a position where he'll be in control of a stolen war machine that will enable him to completely obliterate the menace of Skullmaster forever. But alas, when it finally comes down to committing the fateful deed...Max cannot bring himself to do it because it would also mean destroying Virgil as well. And so he does the unthinkable, and defies and alters destiny itself by choosing to save his friend. Only in doing so he ultimately makes things far worse for them all by inadvertently setting the ultimate evil loose upon the world... Dammit Max!!! There's an astonishingly beautiful moment of fine voice acting from Tim Curry in the scene where Skullmaster is finally free of his underworld prison and takes a moment to breathe in the air and sun that he has not felt in five thousand years. It's touching how he's so overjoyed to simply be free that for a second it's almost as if he forgets he's this big larger-than-life villain. That scene is the highlight of the episode for me. But then he summons and flies away on a brilliantly animated dragon that I swear makes the Doom Dragon look small and declares that "The final conflict has begun!" Oh Skullmaster, you're so awesome! The Yoda-like Virgil is so tiny..it's really funny when he gets mad at Max and hops around in a clucking flurry in frustration! Ha-ha, poor Max, you're stuck with 'em! A remarkably good conclusion to an excellent two-part story that is positively overflowing with the pure magic and greatness that made this show so special. See ya!
