- Long-suppressed family secrets, stolen ancient artifacts, and a thirty year old death at a Celtic burial site result in a series of murders in present day Midsomer.
- Over 30 years ago, archaeologist Paul Heartley-Reade claimed to have found a Celtic spear and chalice in Midsomer Barrow. The relics vanished and there has over the years been extensive debate in academic circles about the find. When the spear is used to kill Gareth Heldman, Barnaby and Sgt. Scott find themselves investigating several local villagers including Harry Green who was fed up with Gareth's advances toward his girlfriend, Vanessa Stone. Vanessa herself had a disagreement with Gareth when he threatened to pull out of a business deal. When a second murder is committed, the police start to unravel a complex web of interrelationships among virtually all of the suspects.—garykmcd
- In 1970, Roger Heldman died in an apparently accidental collapse during a dig at Midsomer Barrow. It unearthed two important Celtic silver-gold pieces, a chalice which went to the museum and a spear. Now (2004) Roger's son Gareth Heldman is killed with the spear, after having several altercations with several villagers, including his love rival, young river keeper Harry Green, who used the spear head to fish for pike, never having learned his father Nathan Green was employed at the fatal dig. At the climax of the summer solstice celebration Gareth's half brother David Heartley-Reade, only one of many mainly illegitimate offspring of Roger (including Vanessa Stone who preferred handsome Harry over rich Gareth), recently published a controversial theory on the Celtic dig contested by the Oxford expert and is killed by arrow while performing a Celtic archer ceremony desperately hoping to save his failing marriage with Miriam. Barnaby and Dan Scott most solve all linked murders, including the drowning at the mill of the above academic, by investigating mythology, rituals, (amateur) archaeological plagiarism, lies, incest comprising a tangle of conflicting interests.—KGF Vissers
- A Celtic spear head, found in an archaeological dig and then stolen, becomes a murder weapon thirty years later. Past relationships come into play as more murders occur and Barnaby and Scott try to determine the connection between the death of the spear's original finder and the current victims.—Ron Kerrigan <mvg@whidbey.com>
