Once a Ranger always a Ranger
Tweekums30 April 2012
Warning: Spoilers
Shortly after this episode begins an undercover cop is killed by a drug dealer known as 'The Bolivian'. Crockett and Tubbs arrange to meet with this Bolivian in their undercover personas but things go wrong and an innocent security guard is killed; to make matters worse, in the confusion, the Bolivian's briefcase with two kilograms of cocaine inside goes missing and he refuses to deal until it is found. It turns out that it was picked up by an old man and he wants a 'finder's fee'. As the investigation continues it turns out that he used to be a cop and not just any cop; a Texas Ranger. Of course cops can turn bad so Crockett and Tubbs can't risk telling him that they are cops.

This was a good story with plenty of action and a poignant ending; as others have said it does have its faults though. There was clearly a change in the planned episode order as Sonny is still driving his black Ferrari and that was blown up several episodes ago! The shootouts are also somewhat unbelievable; heroes can hit a moving bad guy with an old six-shooter but villains toting machineguns can hardly hit anything! Oh well that makes for an exciting scene without having to replace the main cast! Guest star Willie Nelson does a fine job as the aging Texas Ranger and a young Steve Buscemi does well in his relatively small role.

Decent episode...but who's doing continuity?
frankenbenz4 August 2007
Considering Crockett's black Ferrari Daytona was blown to smithereens in episode 2 it's hard to explain how it shows up in this episode. Zito's beard appearing and disappearing from one episode to the next was an issue before, but this one takes the cake.

Another issue that's really getting under my skin are the A-Team like shootouts where the bad guys couldn't shoot straight to save their lives. One of the greatest strengths of Miami Vice was it's realism, but with more and more studio sets and silly shootouts popping up, I'm starting to lose respect for this series as I revisit it for the first time since I was a kid.

All in all, this is decent episode with a great cameo by Willie Nelson.

overall goofy story and execution

Bad music and too much of it. But Willie does a good job, and Gina and Trudy look extra fine in this one. Now about these shoot-outs where a guy with a stationary machine-gun in a van can't hit the car right next to him. Not even any bullet holes.

El Viejo Top 2 Miami Vice Episode!

Theme is Perfect.

Good cops now referencing Great Lawmen of the past.

Avenging the Loss of a partner's son.

"One Riot One Ranger"!

Loved the way Miami Vice Paid Respect to the Lawmen fighting injustice that preceded them.

Willie Nelson portrays a Magnificent character in the Texas Ranger.

Superb!!

As was with the other "Top 2" episode: "Out Where the Buses don't Run" Miami Vice NAILS It with the Climactic Ending Song.

Buses: Brothers in Arms was Immaculate.

El Viejo: State of Emergency, Cactus World News was Spectacular!!

As was evident in all Vice episodes, Music was Vital!!

El Viejo was No Different!!

CLASSIC!!!

Miami Vice meets a Western.
mm-3924 July 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Miami Vice meets a Western. I usually found El Viejo a cheesy episode. After watching El Viejo again El Viejo has an enduring quality. Formulated, and predictable with the usual Miami Vice cliches such as; information at the right time/place, Crockett tells a personal story, shoot out at the ending etc, which happens every week uh again. Well, I did not mind the predictability of El Viejo, because Willy Nelson has an enduring quality. The hard edge Texas Ranger, lawman not a baseball player, makes a El Viejo sentimental. There is a humor and enduring quality which Nelson makes for the Texas lawman character. Of course Crockett a bit of a cowboy himself fits right into the story. Just got to love this episode. I am feeling generous and give the old cowboy 7 stars.

Holy continuity, Batman!

Warning: Spoilers
Of the Season three shows I have watched thus far, this one is one of the better ones. I thought Willie Nelson would do a terrible job as an actor, but I was pleasantly surprised. He actually gave the episode, legs. Some past guest stars really seem to drop the ball, and fail to immerse themselves in their character. There was something genuine about Willie. My biggest gripe is the Daytona continuity. The car was blown up many episodes prior, and now it's back? I read that the producer felt that "When Irish Eyes Are Crying" was a better intro to season 3. I disagree. I felt that El Viejo was superior to When Irish Eyes Are Crying, and the continuity with the Ferarri is maddening.
