Storyline

Attractive but poor Odette, Gina's dear friend from Haiti who makes ends meet as a cleaning lady in Miami, gets raped in Gina's home by a man she knows just moments before Gina and Sonny arrive. After a long chase with the perp's white Lamborghini, Sonny tracks him down and busts him. It turns out the rapist is none other than Roberto 'Nico' Arroyo, the spoiled and cocky son of a wealthy Bolivian general in exile turned respectable banker. Odette used to work for them as a cleaning woman until she heard that their previous maid was raped by Nico. Gina wants the man prosecuted at all costs but the evidence turn out to be circumstantial and Nico's father buys Odette's silence from her mother, who still lives in poverty in Haiti with her two younger daughters. Gina desperately tries to convince Odette not to accept the bribe but the girl feels she has no choice but to sacrifice herself for her poor family. Unfortunately, Odette's decision leads to tragedy. Meanwhile, in a small subplot, ...

Tragic, but nicely made
11 November 2016 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

'Bought and Paid For' features one of the show's nicest car chases, but action isn't the focus here. Instead, it's the sexual assault of a young Haitian immigrant and the political maneuvering to sweep it under the rug. This is deeply personal for Gina, recalling the events of 'Give a Little, Take a Little', and a cold examination of class divide (when a human being's dignity is a commodity to be bought and sold). In the end, justice is done (in classic Vice style) . . . but it's not a happy ending; this is a very bleak episode. Well-directed, but hopelessly bitter.

The bright spot is Joaguim de Almeida, who's about as charismatic a sleaze as one can get.
