MV in LA
Tweekums28 June 2012
Warning: Spoilers
Anybody who thought that there would be less of the 'Sonny and Kaitlin show' when she departed for Los Angeles will be disappointed as Sonny goes with her and this episode is almost entirely devoted to the difficulties their careers bring to their marriage. Sonny clearly doesn't enjoy the celebrity lifestyle in LA and Kaitlin isn't pleased when she finds out that he is investigating her bosses at the record label for murder. Things get even more complicated when a journalist from the National Inquirer... oops 'National Inquisitor' looks into the back ground of Sonny Burnett and finds that the husband of squeaky clean Caitlin Davies is a Miami drug dealer! Her PR people see this as an opportunity to make even more money... her new record looks set to be a hit; and nothing boosts sales like a dead singer!

I had rather hoped that Caitlin's going away would be the end of stories where hers and Sonny's jobs got in each others way so was a bit disappointed that wasn't the case; this does at least seem to have ended the story of the corrupt record label employees. Viewers might be surprised that after a few establishing shots there was no use of any interesting LA landmarks during the episode... it is hardly surprising though as it was filmed in Miami! The idea that the record people would kill Caitlin just as she was getting more popular seems rather far fetched; it might boost the sales of that record but surely in the long term it would be a poor move financially. For most of the episode the action is limited to Sonny and Caitlin dealing with the crowds of fans and Sonny punching a journalist... there was a decent shoot out at the end though. Overall I'd say that this wasn't a terrible episode, certainly nothing like the awful missing hours, but it wasn't great either.

Miami Vice was running out of ideas
mm-3914 August 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Miami Vice was running out of ideas! There can only be so many coke busts, and shoot outs, I guess. In order to keep the audience interest Miami Vice delves into personally deeper into the Crockett character by created a relationship/marriage for the deep cover agent. A big name Sheena Easton is the rock star wife! If you like the relationship A Rock and a Hard Place is okay to watch. The tension and banter of the relationship drives the episode which lacks in plots. Crockett needs some balance in a depraved life, but regrettably A Rock And a Hard Place has no balance between character development and story development. A Rock and a Hard Place story has a few strong moments, a surprise plot twists, but lame on story-line/ending. How could Sonny prove charges, and too much unbelievable back and forth between the bad guys and Crockett. A Rock and a Hard Place is a current main story-line development episode. Have to watch such an episode to keep current with the series, but nothing memorable either. 6 out of 10 stars.

Underrated Masterpiece

This episode is one of the best that Miami Vice has to offer!

It is well written and all the characters feel real. The story may seem a bit bland at first, but it is definitely not boring. I loved the music that they used in this episode. The story is not all black and white, which is a delightful change for once.

'A Rock and a Hard Place' has a slower pace, compared to the other episodes, but it is executed perfectly in my opinion. This episode has a real Miami Vice feeling to it and it is one of the best episodes of S4 and of the whole series in my opinion.

This episode is a great example of Miami Vice with a great script; action, suspense, romance, atmosphere and music!

Wake me up when this one's over...

Talk about sleep inducing episodes. I already had my fill of Crockett and his new bride and then they go and devote an entire episode to her and her -ahem- career. Fresh on the heels of her miserable Sonny and Cher cover, Caitlin has to go to LA to do whatever it is rock stars do (something never made clear). Crockett tags along to faux LA (Miami shot to look like LA) and he winds up hot on the trail of his wife's shady record executives.

This episode was so sloppy they recycled the same airplane b-roll yet reversed it to make it seem like it was flying in the opposite direction. Not a bad trick if the "trans world" and "twa" paint jobs weren't backwards. Beyond recycling b-roll, they recycled all the rock star romance clichés (see the rose if you can stomach babs pretending to be cool for 2 hours) as well as unbelievably stupid villains with hair brained schemes. Here the baddie record execs brainstorm that killing their money making star is a better business venture than riding her revenues til she shrivels up and dies...something that couldn't happen soon enough IMHO.

The only good thing about this episode is that Caitlin is heading out on the road for her big tour. Hopefully this keeps her far away from MV for the rest of the season.

Yet another Caitlin boredom episode.

I watched this hoping against hope that it might be the one which sees the demise of this ultra-irritating character whose marriage with Sonny must have sent ratings plummeting anyway. Every time she comes on the screen whinging and whining about her marital tribulations (what did she expect, being married to a cop?) I could cheerfully slap her. They must have been struggling to find tenuous connections to Miami Vice work to allow them to keep showing these tedious marital spats. (And why does Crockett choose such terminally unattractive women? I expect we'll never know...)
