In the second episode to discuss Mac's past life as a CIA operative, he's called on by his old boss to help investigate a "sleeper," a Communist agent who has lived undetected in the United States and adopted American customs until it's his -- or her -- moment to strike. An upcoming U.S.-Soviet intelligence summit is the apparent moment. The sleeper could be anybody, even Mac's intelligence buddy, because he or she is thoroughly Americanized and could be engaged in anything, including counterintelligence. Throw in several Soviet hit men assigned to waste the sleeper before Mac uncovers his or her identity ... Written by Peter Harris

The final shootout is an homage to the final shootout and chase in Bullitt, but between that show's filming and this one, metal detectors and security guards were installed at all passenger gates. The killer gets through them to shoot an intelligence agent and flees onto the airport runway. (Another character pulls a gun in the baggage claim area, but that's not covered by airport security.) Later, Mac runs down a jetway to chase the killer, and his gun DOES set off the security alarm. Two airport policeman tackle him -- and he shakes them off. See more »

Sleeper Agent
28 July 2015 | by See all my reviews

An old friend of Rock Hudson's turns up from his days in Intelligence work from World War II. Hudson thought he died back then, but he gets contacted and still find him, but finds him recently dead on the streets of San Francisco.

Of course this is a murder that the police commissioner by dint of his intelligence training is uniquely qualified to investigate. Susan Saint James tags along as a girl Friday here. More than in most other episodes of McMillan&Wife Hudson and Saint James function like Nick and Nora Charles.

Another old friend from intelligence work is Barry Sullivan and he confirms that the dead man was indeed Hudson's old buddy from World War II and that his death was faked so he could be an agent. Hudson's friend was on the trail of a sleeper agent when he was killed and the trail also leads to the dead man's girl friend Donna Mills.

The episode is nicely and stylishly done as per the standards of McMillan&Wife. Although I think early on you'll figure out what isn't much of a mystery.
