Quotes

[reading a wanted poster that lists Gentleman Jim's numerous aliases]

Gentleman Jack Darby: It's all a tragic mistake. But I don't intend to let it go uncorrected. If it takes the rest of my life I'm going to clear my good name.

Bart Maverick: Which one?

Gentleman Jack Darby: What seems to be the trouble?

Sheriff: Them. That's what. The Plummers. Alvi, Rafe, Clem, Luke, and Little Jeb. All in town at the same time.

Gentleman Jack Darby: The Plummers?

Sheriff: Yeah. One's bad enough. Two's terrible. Three is disastrous, four is a calamity. But five!

Gentleman Jack Darby: Well, if they're such troublemakers, why don't you go over there and arrest them? Put 'em in jail.

Sheriff: Jail? That's about the only place in town where it's safe.

Sheriff: Well, glory be, they're leaving. Uh-oh. All but Little Jeb. Well, he's the best of the lot. What I mean is, if we were talking about people, he'd be the worst. But talking about Plummers, well, he ain't so bad.

Gentleman Jack Darby: Thank you, gentlemen.

Little Jeb Plummer: Hey, you ain't quittin' while you're winning.

Gentleman Jack Darby: Of course I am.

Little Jeb Plummer: Sit down and deal.

Gentleman Jack Darby: Now, see here, my friend. If a man couldn't quit till he was losing, very few men would play poker.

Horace: Take my word, Mister. You'd be better off going just the opposite way from what he took. There ain't nothin' between here and Deadwood but three days' ride, four Plummer boys and three thousand unfriendly Injuns.

Cindy Lou Brown: Oh, what do you take me for, a fibber?

Cindy Lou Brown: Now what are they up to?

Bart Maverick: I don't know. But I think they're talking about girls.

Cindy Lou Brown: Indians? I thought all they ever did was fight and hunt.

Bart Maverick: Well, some of them hunt for girls.

Cindy Lou Brown: Come from family, one quite poor enough for rich folks to ignore. Just poor enough for them to look down their noses at.

Bart Maverick: If there's one thing I learned about Jack, he won't cheat you out of anything he can hold ya.

Cindy Lou Brown: Well, I reckon there's just one Gentleman Jack Darby.

Bart Maverick: No, not exactly. There are two. The other one's named Dandy Jim Buckley.

Cindy Lou Brown: Who's he?

Bart Maverick: Never mind. We got enough trouble with just one of 'em.

Bart Maverick: Darby's here.

Cindy Lou Brown: Where?

Bart Maverick: That's my horse.

Cindy Lou Brown: Bart, you gonna kill him?

Bart Maverick: Why should I? I like that horse.

Gentleman Jack Darby: All right, Mayor, I'll see you.

[the Mayor shows his hand]

Gentleman Jack Darby: Funny, somehow I didn't count on you having that third ace.

Mayor: Had enough?

Gentleman Jack Darby: For tonight. But I'll try again tomorrow.
