Mary learns directly from her downstairs neighbor Barbara that she is moving, which means Barbara's spacious one-bedroom apartment will be available for rent. Mary would love to move into it, but can't afford the rent, which is almost double her current rent. Mary and Rhoda briefly flirt with the idea of living there together, but decide that that would probably not be the best idea. But that idea is more palatable than who eventually shows interest in renting the apartment: Ted. Both Mary and Rhoda are heartbroken about the possibility of Ted moving in, Mary who even contemplates moving herself just to get away from Ted. After Mary is in near tears about the situation, Lou decides it's time for him to intervene, he who figures he knows what buttons to push so that Ted will decide not to take the apartment.
