A young woman who has entered a county fair competition in a rural community north of Los Angeles disappears, and her wealthy father hires Joe Mannix to look for her. As Mannix begins his investigation, everyone he interviews claims that the woman never arrived in town. Then everyone -- the police, the town council, and even his hotel clerk -- suddenly seem interested only in having Mannix leave town as quickly as possible.
