One of the better episodes.

"The Crime That Wasn't" is one of the better episodes of "Mannix"-- mostly because it was a novel and well-written plot. I also liked it because unlike most of the episodes just before this, Mannix is NOT bashed over the head...just shot at several times!

When the show begins, some crazy guy is chasing a woman through a parking garage with his car--and he appears to be trying to kill her. While the bystanders don't actually see the guy run her down, they hear it. But, when they go up a level to check, there is no body. Has a crime even been committed?

In the following scene, a kid comes to see Mannix. It seems that the kid is worried about his parents as he overheard them talking about a crime that they SHOULD have reported. But, when Mannix talks with the parents, the story is quickly explained...the boy just overheard them watching an old movie in the other room. However, when Mannix looks into the story, it won't hold water. Plus, he recognizes a career criminal sitting across the street from their house--as if he's watching this family. Now Mannix seems to think the kid is right--the parents are trying to hide something. And, as he investigates and talks to other people who were at the same restaurant as the parents, each of them is scared to talk to him and it's obvious that there's a cover-up. Plus, folks start taking shots at him--and there is no way that NOTHING occurred! In his dogged fashion, Mannix is going to see this through to the end of the trail.

The plot is not just novel but very exciting and manages to offer something different. Well done all around and with a cute ending.
