Storyline

Sun and Sky, the horse favored to win the Kentucky Derby and possibly the Triple Crown, is being shipped to Kentucky to participate in the upcoming race. During the flight, however, all four members of the cargo plane's crew are overcome by some kind of drug, though the pilot manages to radio a distress call before losing consciousness. Mannix is hired by the insurance company holding the policy on the missing horse to investigate what happened. His search turns up the missing plane, and all four unconscious men, but not Sun and Sky. Mannix discovers that at least two of the men might have had a motive to steal the horse -- and then receives a confession from the horse's owners that they, too, are having financial problems that would make them suspects as well. Goofs

When Mannix (Mike Connors) goes to investigate the horse farm where he believes the stolen horse is being held, he parks some distance from the buildings and slips across a horse enclosure to approach the buildings unseen. The sun is coming from a low angle as he does so, making his shadow across the enclosure lengthy; but when he reaches the buildings, the sun is suddenly overhead and his shadow is cast beneath him. My wife was just happy no horses were harmed!
10 November 2013 | by (Bradenton, Florida) – See all my reviews

As I sat and watched this episode of "Mannix" with my wife, I was bemused by my wife's reaction--she was happy that no horses were harmed in "Sun and Sky"--it was just a kidnapping. It's funny how many people are more upset by horses or dogs than people. As for my wife, she like "Mannix" reruns and hasn't complained about all the PEOPLE killed in the prior episodes! The show begins with a plane transporting a horse to the racetrack at Timonium, Maryland. It seems the horse is a favorite for the upcoming Preakness and it COULD end up winning American racing's triple crown. However, during the flight, crew and passengers start falling asleep--the victims of adulterated coffee. When the plane is later discovered, it has landed and everyone aboard is asleep--and the prize horse is missing. What happened? How did the plane successfully land? And, oddly, why isn't anyone demanding ransom?! This is a very novel story in which not a single horse was injured. Interesting--especially when a group of hippies end up saving poor Mannix's life!
