Another good episode of "Mannix".
planktonrules9 May 2013
The show begins with a security guard (Gerald O'Laughlin) foiling a robbery. For his efforts, he's given a small reward and soon approaches Mannix with this money, as he wants this detective to find his wife. However, the guard is very cagey about some of the details and Mannix nevertheless agrees. When he finds her, Mannix is smashed over the head and when he awakens, everything is fine--the wife has returned and everyone is happy. However, Mannix is no dummy--something ELSE is going on. What? Well, see this one for yourself to find out.

This is a decent episode--no doubt about it. The show has some nice action sequences. It's made a bit better by having O'Laughlin and Sheree North guest star. I also appreciate that for the first time, after Mannix has his brains beaten in (something VERY common in the show), he's actually admitted to the hospital to make sure he's okay!!

Strong episode
shakspryn24 December 2021
When an hour show has one main character, that person has to be likable and compelling, someone you want to keep watching. It's not an easy thing to pull off! Mission Impossible, for instance, or Hawaii 5-0, had teams of people. Shows like Mannix or Cannon had the one guy. (Cannon didn't even have a secretary; at least Peggy was there to help Joe!).

Mike Connors makes Joe Mannix a guy you like. He's warm, generous and kind; good with his fists and his pistol (he had an automatic in Season 1, it looks like he's changed to a snub-nosed .38 in Season 2); and he could be charming with the attractive ladies who often crossed his path.

Gerald McLaughlin is a guest star in this outing, and he was an actor who was always good; he brought energy and credibility to every part he played--a consummate professional actor. Sheree North, a fine actress, is also in this episode. The villains are pretty good, too. There's lots of action. The dvd I'm watching has a great picture; the visuals are very sharp. It's like watching a movie, not a TV show over 50 years old!

A young and very beautiful Barbara Rhoades also has a guest role.

Fans will enjoy this episode.

Decent enough

Warning: Spoilers
I wanted to like this episode more than I did. Well written with plenty of action from the start. The cast is fine as far as the individual acting. I think my sticking point is I can't see Gerald O'Laughlin and Sheree North as a couple. Not sure why but I just don't see it.

Plankton covers the beginning of this outing, so I'll complete the episode with all the spoilers. Joe gets out of the hospital and noses around despite being fired by Charlie. He learns the bad guys lead by Harvey Templeton (Lee Bergere) are planning a heist at the airport holding area for valuable cargo where Charlie works as a guard. The bad guys plan to keep Charlie from interfering by threatening his wife Rose. Rose shows up at Joe's office to confirm the theory. Joe goes to Templeton's house and learns Templeton is stealing his own shipment to get the insurance money while keeping his stuff. Joe takes him down in his own house and then races to the airport. The heist is happening when Joe arrives and says Rose is safe. Charlie springs into action. The two good guys take out the bad guys and stop the robbery. Why didn't Joe call the police from Templeton's house to tell them about the robbery as the police could get there faster with more people? I have no idea.

Some nice touches. Joe goes to an ol' pro Nick for background info and after the conversation we find he is in prison. I think this episode is the only time the bad guys use a submachine gun. In this case a German MP40 that the show probably got from the Combat equipment room. Barbara Rhoades is good. Every time I see her, I think of her in The Shakiest Gun in the West. Byron Morrow is great as Nick. Ronald Long is fine as the slimeball who runs hookers while pretending to be among the social elite. I like Peggy parting comment to Joe, "Don't get hit in the head!" Always good advice for him.

Not sure Joe got paid as Charlie saved his life once and Charlie and Rose are not rich. Joe gets knocked out and they actually treat it like it means something. He even goes to the hospital. A good episode in a lot of ways but I didn't buy the central couple. Watch it and see what conclusions you come to.

TRYING HARD TO FAKE OUT MANNIX...
tcchelsey21 January 2023
Tribute here to Sheree North, who in the 1950s was promoted as a second Marilyn Monroe, and with good reason as she was also a singer and dancer. She had many film and tv credits, and came off best in cop shows later in her career.

Here, she plays the title character Rose, wife of Charlie (played by popular actor Gerald S. O'Loughlin). The problem with this couple is there's something going on. He's an airport security guard and she disappears ...if you can connect the dots. Mannix also discovers she has an R rated past, best not gone into --or should he? The cost to Joe is a trip to the hospital (he gets whalloped) which is par for the course.

A well written adventure by Lee Loeb. Lee had many talents and is credited for also writing three films for ABBOTT AND COSTELLO, two of their monster films at that. There's no comedy here, except to say that North and O'Loughlin make an interesting team who keep you guessing. It all reminds me of the previous season's two part episode with Beverly Garland and Dana Elcar, and what a team they made. Hmmm?

Look for tall, skinny Lee Bergere, part of tv cult fame, who played Abraham Lincoln in a classic episode of STAR TREK. Actually, that was his next credited tv appearance. Later he played Lincoln in the acclaimed 1976 tv mini series.

True, it looks like Mannix switched guns in the second season (which is not unusual as this p.i. Needed heavy artillery) though the focus was always on muscle cars for all of us teens at heart. And yes, Peggy's role slowly begins to grow.

I think the big mistake in these early episodes is that she should have been formally introduced, being hired by Joe right off the bat and making a story around it. Or perhaps... she came to Joe for help and became his secretary in the end, something like that. All history now.

Try to put the pieces together, and don't forget the late night snacks. SEASON 2 EPISODE 2 remastered CBS dvd box set. Keep an eye on the box sets as the prices vary.
