McGill faces the guillotine!
15 August 2009 | by (Ambrosia) – See all my reviews

Millionairess Eleanor ( Faith Brook ) believes her husband Bernard ( Drewe Henley ) to be having an affair, and hires McGill to keep tabs on him. Mac is reluctant to take on a divorce case, but changes his mind when she dangles a huge cheque in front of his nose.

So off Mac flies to Paris. Bernard is a patron of the Club De La Guillotine, a bizarre establishment where mock executions are staged for the audience's amusement. Mac spots his quarry in the company of the beautiful Jeannine ( Dora Reisser). He tries to talk to her, but Bernard angrily warns him off.

Hours later, Jeannine is found dead at her flat. Mac is arrested for her murder. Escaping from jail, he sets out to clear his name...

Written by Vincent Tilsley, author of two of my favourite 'Prisoner' episodes ( 'The Chimes Of Big Ben' and 'Do Not Forsake Me Oh My Darling' ). It is a conventional detective story, incorporating over-familiar genre ingredients such as adultery and murder, though its well directed ( as ever ) by Charles Crichton. There is a bit too much of the Club on view for my liking. Presumably having hired a group of dancers, producer Sidney Cole wanted as much of them on screen as possible. Their on-screen gyrating slows the pace somewhat.

Drewe Henley was once married to Jacqueline Pearce ( lucky fellow! ) who appeared in both 'Sweet Sue' and 'Somebody Loses, Somebody...Wins?'. Charles Lloyd Pack, cast as a French magistrate, was a semi-regular in I.T.C.' Strange Report' and also the father of Roger ( 'Trigger' from 'Only Fools & Horses' ). As the gaoler is the splendid Colin Jeavons, better known as 'Mr.Shadrach' from the L.W.T. sitcom 'Billy Liar'.

The title refers to the 'fact' that those sent to the guillotine are supposed to blink three times following beheading. Never having seen a beheading myself, I am unable to confirm or deny it. Either way, it makes a great episode title.
