"Let the blood come..."
23 May 2009 | by (Ambrosia) – See all my reviews

McGill, along with a man called 'Bates', blows up a fuel dump in the African state of Kalunga. What is going on here? Has our hero finally gone bad? 'Garfield Cameron' ( Clive Morton ), founder of the Cameron Mining Company, has hired Mac to infiltrate the firm's security force in order to learn who is attempting to discredit 'Masuto' ( Errol John ), a local politician seeking independence for the state. Cameron's son-in-law 'James Baldwin' ( Peter Halliday ) does not want Masuto running the country. 'Turner' ( Allan Cuthbertson ) has Mac beaten up when the truth comes out. Baldwin orders that the plant be temporarily closed, a decision that causes deep resentment and anger among the workforce, anger that looks set to explode into violence. Masuto tells Mac: "Let the blood come, because after the blood comes freedom.".

John Stanton, also a writer on 'The Saint', has fashioned a strong political story with Mac again being caught between two opposing sides. Like 'Brainwash', the villains of the piece are attempting to reverse the independence of an African state, not out of any sense of misguided patriotism, but from concern over profit. Having exploited the locals for years, they wish to go on doing so. The same stock footage of an exploding fuel dump was used twice in this episode.

Clive Morton played 'The Dean' in the opening episode of the sitcom 'Doctor At Large' in 1971. Interestingly, the actor he temporarily replaced - Ralph Michael - is in this too. Allan Cuthbertson played villains in other I.T.C. shows, such as 'Major Cranmore' in 'The Experiment' episode of 'The Champions'. Errol John ( Masuto ) cropped up in various 'Danger Man' episodes set in Africa.

During the riot, Cameron is accidentally shot and killed. It is left to his daughter 'Patricia' ( Phillippa Gail ) to roundly condemn her husband's actions.

As was the case with 'The Whisper', it is the greedy company owner who is the villain, making the story into a neat ( and relevant ) anti-capitalistic statement.
