Solo & Kuryakin Go Looking For Perfume

Solo has stolen a THRUSH formula and secreted it in a perfume atomizer. Wanting it back, the evil organisation chase him through the city. Cornered, he drops the atomizer into the purse of Darlene Simms ( Julie Sommars ), an unsuspecting American tourist. He then sets about trying to get it back with Illya's help.

THRUSH dispatches one of its agents, the handsome Count Cesare Guardia ( Cesare Danova ) to charm Darlene. Being somewhat naive, she is taken in by him. But he winds up falling for her.

The men from U.N.C.L.E. must not only find the atomizer but save Darlene from execution at the hands of THRUSH...

One of the few 'M.F.U.' episodes to be written by a woman, this is mediocre but sandwiched between 'The Hot Number Affair' and 'The Apple A Day Affair', must have seemed like a return to form at the time. We never find out what the formula is for, it is obviously important but we're never told why. A bit more action would have helped. Darlene's romantic trysts with the Count take up far more time than is necessary.

In one scene, Illya tries to break into Darlene's room, only to be confronted by annoying American boy Sammy Sparks ( Billy Corcoran - later to become a successful T.V. director ) who demands Illya read him a bedtime story. Top marks to Illya for his restraint in not pushing the whining brat off the balcony.

Julie Sommars had previously played 'Mimi Doolittle' in Season 2's 'The Foxes & Hounds Affair'. Cesare Danova was 'Actor' in 'Garrisons Gorillas'. Kathleen Freeman, who plays 'Mrs.Sparks', co-starred in umpteen Jerry Lewis movies.

One of two Season 3 episodes to be produced by Irv Pearlberg, the other being the aforementioned 'The Apple A Day Affair'.

Another mystery - just what did Sammy want with an empty perfume atomizer?

THE MAN FROM UNCLE – The When in Rome Affair - 1967

This is the 85th episode of 1964 to 1968 spy series, THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E. The series ran for a total of 105 episodes. The first season was filmed in black and white with the remainder shot in colour. Robert Vaughn plays agent Napoleon Solo while David McCallum plays Illya Kuryakin. Leo G Carroll plays Mister Waverly, the boss of the secret agency known as U.N.C.L.E. (United Network Command for Law & Enforcement) UNCLE's main enemy is THRUSH, an organization out to take over the planet.

This season three episode starts out with THRUSH agents chasing UNCLE type, Robert Vaughn through the streets of Rome. They want back a perfume atomizer Vaughn has. The bottle contains some sort of secret formula. Vaughn drops the bottle in the bag of an American tourist just before THRUSH captures him.

A bit of fierce in his face interviewing, fails to persuade Agent Vaughn to disclose what he did with the bottle. The THRUSH boss decides to arrange for Vaughn to escape, then, they can follow him to where the formula is.

The American tourist, Julie Sommars, finds the bottle in her bag and wonders where it came from. The rest of the episode has the THRUSH and UNCLE types both trying to retrieve the bottle. There are the usual captures, escapes and gun battles that by this time in the series have grown rather stale.

The episode does have several interesting guest stars. First up is long time b-film cult icon, Sid Haig as a THRUSH killer. Then Kathleen Freeman pops up as Sommars' escort. Freeman started out in 1948 and worked till her death in 2001. (290 diff roles)The name might not mean anything, but her mug and voice sure would. Last, but by no means least, we have Cesare Danova as a THRUSH agent who falls for Miss Sommars, then switches teams to UNCLE. Danova played many a Latian lover, pirate captain and bandit leader. He was on screen between 1947 and 1992.

The episode is a step up from the proceeding episode, but that is not really saying much. For a series that started out so promising, it sure did not take long to start shooting themselves in the foot. At most a 5/10
