Academy for assassins!
9 June 2009 | by (Ambrosia) – See all my reviews

Information provided by a dying agent leads Solo and Kuryakin to a fencing school in Mexico run by Dr.Stoller ( Paul Lukas ) which is, in reality, a THRUSH academy for assassins. Its star pupil, Greg Martin ( Christopher Jones ), gives U.N.C.L.E. the slip and goes to Greece to carry out a training exercise - wiping out an entire town by blowing up a dam.

The beautiful Christine ( Lynn Loring ) tags along. The U.N.C.L.E. duo capture her, then let her go, hoping to find Greg using a tracking device...

As part of Anthony Spinner's 'back to basics' programme, a number of Season One writers were brought back, among them Jack Turley, co-author of 'The Finny Foot Affair'. This is one of the darker episodes; Solo and Kuryakin are constantly outwitted by Martin, and he only fails in his mission because he rescues Christine from a burning car. Still, the legendary U.N.C.L.E. automobile is on view again ( I always wanted Dinky to bring out a die cast version, and they never did ), and Lynn Loring ( who appeared the previous year in 'The Deadly Smorgasboard Affair' ) is a sight for sore eyes.

In a nice touch, a bunch of THRUSH agents observes the proceedings of the climax whilst posing as a coach load of tourists. When the mission fails, they simply get back on their bus and drive off. Solo and Kuryakin watch them leave without once figuring out who they really are.

Christopher Jones, who plays 'Martin', went on to star the following year as the wonderfully named 'Paxton Quigley' in the sex comedy 'Three In The Attic' ( which alas I have not seen, but have read the book! ) and also in 'Ryan's Daughter'.

Though Martin is dead, Dr.Stoller and his other teenage assassins remain at large, setting the scene for a sequel that never happened.
