"Mr.Solo, I've been an enemy of yours for a long time!"
8 August 2009 | by (Ambrosia) – See all my reviews

At a secret desert location, Illya witnesses the testing of M4 - a new element that explodes with near-atomic force whenever it is heated to 90 degrees. Returning to New York, both he and Solo are attacked at the airport by THRUSH men. The formula is safe, but alas another U.N.C.L.E. agent manages to lose a sample of the explosive, hidden in a hula doll.

Solo and Kuryakin are assigned to find it before it goes off. THRUSH's New York headquarters is concealed behind the facade of the Thraler and Usher Habadashery Store on 555 Felton Avenue. Brothers Peter ( Pat Harrington ) and Simon Sweet ( Jan Murray ) are competing for the job of Head Of THRUSH - New York. The latter decides to kidnap an U.N.C.L.E. agent - Solo in this case - and make him impersonate Number 26 of THRUSH Central in order to rig a casting vote in his favour.

Meanwhile, Illya keeps tab on Mama Sweet ( Patsy Kelly ) by spying on her through the wall of a closet belonging to her neighbour Marge ( Bobbie Jordan )...

In common with most Season 3 episodes, this is played for laughs. The difference here is that it gets them. Stanford Sherman's script is peppered with amusing situations and lines. Mr.Waverly chastising Illya for letting the Sweet brothers get away alone had me laughing out loud. Pat Harrington, who had appeared in an earlier Season 3 outing ( the dismal 'Come With Me To The Casbah Affair' ) is great, as is Jan Murray ( the villain in the low-budget Bond knock-off 'A Man Called Dagger' ), but its Patsy Kelly as their chicken soup-making mother - who turns out to be the real Number 26 of THRUSH Central - who makes this a pleasure to watch. "I'm a THRUSH woman first, a mother second!", she storms, as she proposes executing her sons for incompetence.

Edy Williams, seen briefly as an U.N.C.L.E. technician, appeared in Russ Meyer's movies. Even the normally unflappable Illya seems transfixed by the sight of her ample cleavage.

The director, Eddie Saeta, later worked as Assistant Director on the 1971 Bond movie 'Diamonds Are Forever'.

Great fun.
