- A magician has developed a mind-reading device and offers it to UNCLE. The problem is Thrush, led by rivals Victor Marton and Miss Belmont, also is seeking the machine.
- The Magnificent Merlin, a nightclub magician in Paris, has developed an electronic mind translator. He offers it to U.N.C.L.E. who becomes highly interested after Merlin demonstrates he can successfully read sensitive information from Ilya's mind. Senior THRUSH operative Victor Marton hears of the device and covets it after Merlin reads his mind, too. Waverly realizes this, so he sets up Mimi Doolittle, an innocent American tourist who had substituted as Merlin's assistant for his final performance, to appear as the courier to bring the machine to U.N.C.L.E.'s New York labs. Napoleon is blindly sent as a recognizable U.N.C.L.E. agent to intercept her luggage and complete the deception. Lucia Belmont, one of Marton's rivals for THRUSH status, grabs Napoleon. Later, they go after Mimi and snag Ilya as he tries to protect her. Meanwhile, Ilya's partner Cantrell takes the mind translator to Canada via a commercial flight. From there he will charter a private plane and bring it to New York. Belmont uses sodium pentathol-plus to worm the arrival time and destination for Cantrell's plane. Napoleon and Ilya must coach Mimi to use her undeveloped feminine wiles to distract a guard so they can escape. Marton's plastic explosive handkerchief plays an unexpected role.—Garon Smith
