Viva Angela!

Angela Abaca is the democratically elected leader of a South American country. The people adore her. But she has enemies - a revolutionary group known only as 'The Secret Three' is plotting to assassinate her so that THRUSH can take over. After saving her life, Illya is mistakenly arrested and almost shot by a firing squad.

Once his identity is proved, he becomes a hero. This means he can no longer work secretly, hence he calls on Napoleon to find out who The Secret Three are. The answer is astonishing...

I usually dislike spy show plots where the hero has to act as bodyguard to some politician or ruler ( 'The Champions' episode 'Desert Journey' springs to mind ). What tends to happen is that the intended victim is depicted as being arrogant and unpleasant and only grows to like his/her 'guardian' after being saved from death. 'The Fiery Angel Affair' manages to confound expectations; it is exciting and boasts some unexpected twists and turns. Illya resorting to kidnapping being one ( he whisks Angela off to Switzerland where they pose as husband and wife ). The late Madlyn Rhue ( who previously appeared in Season 1's 'The Terbuf Affair' ) is well cast as the 'Evita' like leader.

Director Richard Benedict's other television credits include 'Get Smart' and 'Mission: Impossible'.

Season 4 is often criticised for its alleged lack of humour. This story has a scene in which Illya is mobbed by excited teenage girls, mirroring McCallum's real-life fame. It manages to be both funny and logical within the context of the plot.

Another good episode.
