This story is a thinly veiled adaption of the short story "The Most Dangerous Game," by Richard Connell. In that story a man is hunted by someone named Zaroff, who is bored with hunting animals and wants a bigger challenge: another human being.
While Jerry Goldsmith receives the music credit, he didn't actually write any music specifically for the episode. The "score" was adapted from Goldsmith's season one scores.
"A hammer, a chisel and thou". This could be an allusion to the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam which has the line
"Here with a Loaf of Bread beneath the Bough,
A Flask of Wine, a Book of Verse - and Thou"
