The colour of ( rent ) money

Robin is playing Poker with his mates, Larry and Derek ( Jeremy Bulloch ). The air in the flat is thick with cigarette smoke and the smell of cheap beer. Robin suddenly complains of a sore throat, so Derek ( being a doctor ) offers to have a look. He diagnoses tonsillitis.

While Robin goes off to hospital to have his tonsils out, the next game goes ahead as planned, only with Chrissy taking his place. The trouble is, she does not know how to play...

A less than brilliant end to an otherwise good season. Putting Robin in hospital effectively keeps him away from the others for much of the story. Where's Chrissy's sense in gambling good money on a game she knows she cannot play? She phones Robin for help but he lets her down badly. There's some amusement to be had in seeing the astonished looks on Larry's and Derek's faces as Jo produces fairy cakes and barley water instead of the expected sandwiches and beer, and Chrissy raising the stakes by a penny a game, but not much.

Jeremy Bulloch is best known for playing 'Boba Fett' in 'The Empire Strikes Back' and 'Return Of The Jedi'. He also appeared in two Roger Moore Bond films.

Funniest moment - Roper, desperate to enter the Poker game, steals the money Mildred has put by for a new coat. When she finds out, she storms into the flat, clutching an empty Toby jug ( which is where she had kept the money ). The next time we see Roper ( visiting Robin in hospital ), he has a bandage on his head!

Fans only had to wait three months for Season 4 and, just in case they suffered from withdrawal symptoms, there was the Hammer movie version, released at Christmas. It suffered from the usual faults of sitcom movies, being stretched to fit the requirements of the big screen, and overloaded with superfluous new characters, but had its moments, most notably Robin and Larry working in Bill Maynard's disgustingly filthy restaurant kitchen.
