Trivia

Although it is widely accepted that this episode was to be the last episode of Magnum, P.I., ending the series with Thomas Magnum's death, that story is apocryphal. Writer/consultant Jay Huguely makes it clear in the audio commentary he recorded for the 2nd episode of the 8th and final season that while Tom Selleck was OK with the idea, CBS and the syndicators were never going to let it happen that way. He states that CBS picked the show up for an 8th season the night before production began on this episode. He was still writing the episode at the time and was able to leave Magnum walking off into the clouds because the producers knew they would be bringing him back in the next episode, the first in the 8th season. Had CBS chosen not to renew Magnum, P.I. for one more season, it would undoubtedly have demanded the episode's conclusion be changed so that Magnum survived the near-death experience, ending the program on a happy note.
