While the proper pronunciation of Kenya is as it looks ("ken ya"), Higgins pronounces Kenya "key-nya." This would be appropriate in this context, as the British had always mispronounced the name and stubbornly resisted any urge to pronounce it properly.
This story takes many liberties regarding Kenya and its culture, but the mention of atrocities on both sides of the Mau Mau conflict is accurate. By the mid 1950s the British knew that the independence of its colonies was inevitable. The British position was to take it slow so that the Kenyans would attain the skills, knowledge and experience necessary to take over the government and infrastructure, rather than simply handing things over without regard for the turmoil that might follow. The result of this policy was that Kenya became one of the most stable of all former British colonies. Of the former three members of British East Africa - Kenya, Uganda, and Tanganyika (Tanzania, after the incorporation of Zanzibar) - Kenya was seen as having less economic potential than the others but because of the way the British handled the transition, Kenya experienced far better success than the other two.
